Quick Culling Tip // Family Photography Education with Hannah Mann
During my busiest months in 2023, September through November, my second born turned 9, my littlest turned 3, we took a vacation to the Tetons and Yellowstone, celebrated an anniversary, socialized regularly, and completed multiple house projects (my favorite form of recreation, really!). None of this would have been possible without strategically planning for fall back at the beginning of the year, booking spots early, and sticking to my limits.
There were many years that I didn’t plan and prepare well for fall, and boy did I feel it when those months showed up. If you tend to struggle through this season, don’t fear – in the early new year, you can set yourself up for real success next season! And if you’re reading this close to or during fall, don’t worry: it’s still not too late to make wise choices and set yourself up for a healthy, profitable busy season while opting out of the burnout. You can find my three part series on busy season here: one | two | three.
QUICK TIP: CULLING
I also wanted to share a quick culling tip with you today – it’s one that I recently shared with my mastermind students, and that they loved! And it’s also extremely simple: once you’ve gone through an initial cull and you’re trying to narrow down your gallery more, rearrange your photos so that visually similar images are next to each other. This enables you to make sure that you’re not including too many similar images just because they were taken several minutes apart. Instead, it helps you focus on the gallery as a whole entity, and choose the best of the best images, not simply the best images from each set.
For example, I’ll often snag quick portraits of individual children throughout my session, with each pose. However, I don’t need all of them. If I simply cull chronologically, I will likely be inclined to keep a couple of those detail shots from every pose – yet in reality, I don’t need them all and they feel repetitive. When I rearrange visually, I can see the images that I repeated (or almost repeated) more than needed, and it ensures that my clients aren’t stuck doing any culling for me. 😉
