Business Strategy for Photographers // The Secret to Growing Your Business
If you’ve been overwhelmed by way too much marketing lately, you’re not imagining it. There are more voices than ever telling us how to do better and be better, and there is always something being sold as the thing that will finally make it click:
a new lens
a preset pack
a workshop
a branding refresh
a website template
a new strategy that promises easier bookings
To be fair… a lot of those things are actually great.
But even a great thing at the wrong time won’t help you grow!
And many times we don’t realize that we’re taking good steps in the wrong order, and prioritizing the ones that offer instant gratification (new presets! new lens!) over the ones that will actually grow our business in the long term (SEO… refining our portfolio… updating our email templates…).
When this happens, we feel like we’re moving forward and being productive — but we’re not actually doing the boring work that creates real change down the line.
So today, I want to give you a framework you can run any decision through — whether you’re making a purchase or prioritizing where to spend your work hours — to help you invest in what actually grows your business.
Time and money are precious resources, and smart strategy is what will make them work for you and get your business growing!
First off: there are two kinds of growth.
This distinction clears up so much confusion. Even though it’s simple, being mindful of these differences is a huge help in and of itself:
1. Skill growth
- becoming stronger and more confident leading sessions
- learning to shoot in challenging light
- getting consistent with editing
- creating a portfolio that stands out from the crowd
2. Business growth
- reaching more people
- booking more consistently
- pricing sustainably
- streamlining systems
- improving client experience
I constantly see photographers invest in the wrong kind of growth for the season they’re in.
>> They invest in skill growth when they really need visibility.
>> They invest in business growth when they don’t yet have the skills to back it up.
Neither is “bad.” It’s just mistimed — and mistimed investments are where you waste time and money.

My decision framework (strategy time!)
The next time you’re considering a purchase or a new direction, ask yourself the questions below.
A quick note: These questions are designed to get you thinking about the real impact of your decisions. A good decision doesn’t mean you answered every question with a yes — it means that you were able to weigh the cost and benefit honestly!
1. Will this reach more clients?
If the answer is no, it might still be worth it… but don’t pretend it’s a marketing plan. If you need to grow your business, this is an important question to consider.
2. Will this make my life simpler or easier?
Will it save time? Reduce stress? Create consistency?
Sometimes, another expense is truly worth the cost because of time and sanity saved. Other times, it’s just adding to our overhead.
3. Will it make me a better artist?
Your artistic skills are absolutely worth investing in at the right time — they’re what your business is built on, after all! Ask yourself: will this genuinely improve my work… or just feel fun for a week?
4. Is there a foundational step I should complete first?
This is a big one. Sometimes your most impactful next step is the most unglamorous:
- update your portfolio
- fix your pricing
- tighten your website copy
- improve your workflow
- start posting consistently
- put effort into your email list
The basics are boring, but they are also what build businesses!
5. Will this increase revenue… or just feel productive?
Some purchases improve skill or confidence — great!
But not all purchases increase income. You may be spending money and feeling like you’re growing… while your business stays flat.
6. Am I choosing this because it aligns… or because I want relief?
Sometimes we invest because we’re excited and aligned. And sometimes we invest because we’re anxious, overwhelmed, or insecure and we want certainty back.
One is strategic… and one is emotional spending.
7. Will I still be glad I did this in 6 months?
If it’s a short-term dopamine hit, it won’t matter in 6 months.
If it’s foundational, it will!

Real life examples:
Example 1: Presets
Presets/color profiles are one of the most tempting purchases in photography, because they promise consistency, beauty, that certain look.
The right presets are a big part of our artwork — but a new purchase isn’t always the right next step. Before you buy, consider:
Are you actually happy with what you’re shooting?
Presets don’t fix poor lighting, outfits you aren’t inspired by, or struggles with composition. They enhance good work, but are only the icing on the cake.
So before you buy presets, ask yourself:
- Do I like the light I’m choosing?
- Am I happy with how I’m running my sessions?
- Am I creating interesting images?
If the answer is “not really,” you might not need a preset pack just yet. You might need to build your foundation first: light, exposure, and shooting consistency.
Example 2: Education
Education can be genuinely life-changing… or a total waste. The key is choosing the right education for your current season.
If you’re fully booked but drowning, you don’t need a creativity workshop.
You need systems, workflows, and editing efficiency.
If you’re not booking consistently, you might not need another editing course.
You may need visibility: website, marketing, messaging, and consistency.
And if you’re booking but feeling inconsistent and sick of guessing?
That’s a great time for skill growth education.
The goal isn’t buying less education— it’s buying smarter education.
Example 3: Rebrands & templates
Photographers often rebrand or buy a new website template because:
- bookings are slow
- they feel stuck
- they want a fresh start
- they’re trying to get their confidence back
I’m a huge advocate for a great website template and an intentional brand, and sometimes a rebrand is the very best choice.
But other times, it’s avoidance disguised as productivity.
If your portfolio isn’t updated, your pricing isn’t sustainable, or your marketing is inconsistent… rebranding won’t fix it. It will just give you a new thing to obsess over while you avoid building a healthy foundation!

The bottom line:
I love education. I love my camera and my presets and my website template. I absolutely believe that it’s necessary to invest with intention — and that wise investments will more than pay for themselves with time!
Next time you’re weighing a purchase or strategizing how to spend your work hours, go through these questions so you can make your choice with a full understanding of the impact.
Sometimes the answer will be:
“Yes. Do it.”
And sometimes the answer will be:
“Not yet. Build the foundation first.”
I promise, both are progress!
