Unbasic Creatives

New!

Welcome to the Untethered Photography Community — a social-media-free photography publication created to celebrate the heart of family photography and the artists behind it. Here, we feature inspiring photographers from all over the family and newborn industry, sharing their work, their stories, and the unique ways they see and serve their clients.

This community exists to uplift, connect, and empower — without the noise and distraction. Whether you're just starting out or you're years into your journey, the hope is that you'll see yourself reflected here and feel encouraged to keep showing up, creating, and trusting your instincts. May you grow untethered from perfectionism, comparison, or the voice that says you’re not enough.

Want to connect further? Consider Unbasic Creatives coaching and keep your eye on in-person workshop dates. And if you'd like to be featured, you can find details here!

Encouragement for New Photographers: Going First

Equip & Empower

As a stand alone business, photographers are often very much going about building and running a business all on their own.  After moving states and trying to launch into full time photography, I knew I didn’t want that to be my reality.

Sometimes, though, relying on the people in our personal community to be the ones to encourage us and support our efforts isn’t always the best option. I knew I wanted to find other photographers that I could be friends with, while learning from each other and celebrating each other’s success. However, this is sometimes easier said than done.

Creating for Your Client vs. Creating for Your Audience

Equip & Empower

Picture this: You shoot an incredible family session. It’s everything you’ve ever dreamed of creating. The experience itself is a joy, and your clients are brought to tears at the sight of their images.

From an artistic perspective, this is it for you. This session and these images are the essence of everything you’ve ever dreamed of creating as a photographer. You feel like you’re creating the art that you were created to create. Pure. Bliss.

Photographer Feature: Q&A with Caroline Klaar

Q&A

Hi, I’m Caroline! I am the owner and founder of Klaar Photography, a wedding and family
photography studio based in Southern New Hampshire. I am originally from Sweden, and I have
been a professional photographer since I was 18—nearly 20 years now (yikes!).

My story with photography started long before I turned it into a career. In high school, I was both
a photographer and a journalist for our school magazine, and I knew pretty quickly that visual
storytelling was what I wanted to do with my life. In my early 20s, I moved to Boston and earned
my Bachelor’s degree in Photography in 2015. Since then, I have been incredibly lucky to build
a business doing what I love—and meet so many amazing people along the way.

Building a Business: It’s Okay to Grow Slow

Equip & Empower

When I first picked up a camera, I had no idea where it would lead me. It started simply—with a thoughtful gift from my husband on our wedding day: my very first DSLR.

At the time, I didn’t have a business plan or a dream of becoming a photographer. I was just a newlywed, photographing anything and everything that brought me joy—mugs of coffee, food, cozy corners of our home. But people… people were always my favorite. I started practicing with my sisters and quickly realized how much I loved capturing emotion, connection, and life in its simplest forms.

Q&A

I’m Lauren, a newborn and family photographer in North Texas. I live in Aledo with my husband, two kids, and goldendoodle. I love being outdoors hanging out by a fire pit with my family or going on walks with my dog and friends. I’m an aspiring gardener and would love to one day finally grow an avocado tree to supply all the guacamole my family can eat. As an adoptive mom, I love being able to give families beautiful images of themselves that will serve as a reminder for all the small moments they share together.

Photographer Feature: Q&A with Shelley Schaffer

Q&A

I’m Shelley, a family, motherhood and headshot photographer based in Fort Collins, CO. I’m a mother to a grown son, an ex-bartender, an animal lover and avid gardener. My husband and I enjoy fly fishing, off-roading and riding bikes. I have deep love for portraiture and am lit up by creating art of moms and their children.

Q&A

After six years working as a lawyer in New York City, I gave up that intense, high-profile career and course-corrected to find a path that was a better fit for me. (Life is short, after all!) That eventually led me back to my long-time passion of photography, and I decided to take the risk and go for it (by starting my own photo business). It was 100% the right move, and I’m grateful every day that I trusted my gut and listened to my heart.
